Statement Regarding Coronavirus

As the first confirmed case of Coronavirus in ND has been announced, schools are being asked to address how they will respond. The following is the statement GCC sent to the Courier:

As Governor Doug Burgum said today in his morning press conference, we need to make “decisions on facts not on fear.” This is the approach that administrators at Griggs County Central will take when making decisions regarding the coronavirus and our K-12 public school. Right now we are getting our information regarding the virus from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, our Local Health Officials, the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction, and the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools webpage. Right now these entities are telling us that our best approach is slowing the disease and working to prevent the spread by effective handwashing, encouraging students and staff to stay home from school when sick, and using approved and effective cleaning products in our public school. We recognize there may be mandated cancellations of student travel and cancelled school events, and we also realize we may need to make these cancellations even in the absence of any mandates. As a step specific to GCC to encourage students to stay home when sick, we will be removing the attendance requirement in our incentive policies (i.e. semester tests and senior privileges). We will use district policies ACAA Emergency Closings and ACBB Significant Contagious Diseases, both of which can be found on our district webpage, to guide our future steps should tough decisions need to be made in the coming days.

We will be putting posters up around the school called “Keeping the School Safe.” The poster can be found here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/workplace-school-and-home-guidance.pdf. This comes from a publication of the CDC and was referenced by Governor Doug Burgum in his morning address. Staff and students are being asked to review the appropriate parts with your students.

If guidance changes, we will keep you informed.
